How to Say No to Drinking During the New Years Celebrations

Ranked #4 in World Holidays
How to tell persistent holiday revelers that you do not want to drink during your New Years celebrations

The Christmas celebrations are over and the New Year celebrations are about to begin. Though many people prefer to stay home and watch the ball come down in Times Square, there are still party revelers out and about. New Years is the traditional time to bring out the bubbly. New Years is also the time too drink a little too much and that is when the accidents on the road occurs.

In Montreal you can avoid the accidents if you have been drinking by calling Operation Nez Rouge, a charity organization who will come and pick you and and take you home if you have been drinking.

However, what can you do if you do not want to drink during the celebration and you feel pressured that your friends will want to stronghold you into drinking?

Although it is not advisable to pretend to be drunk in order to get the services of Nez Rouge, there are some excuses you can use to save yourself from drinking.

Your driving

First of all you can tell everyone you are the designated driver. This of course will be handled with respect by even the most inebriated of drinkers. With Montreal snowstorms and icy streets, you don’t want to take the chance of having an accident.

Stay clear headed

A second excuse which goes hand in hand with driving is that you want to keep a clear head. If you are inebriated your cognitive functions are impaired and your reflexes are slower making it risky for driving.

Or, you may simply want to be clearheaded because you have children at home to take care of and so on.

You are on medication

Diabetics are very concerned about their blood sugar level which goes up when you are drinking. Then are are certain medications which just do not mix with alcohol.

If you are not driving nor on medication, nor necessarily need to maintain a clear head, there are a few more excuses you can give when you don’t want to drink but you don’t want to be bothered by your friends practically insisting on your drinking as well.

You have had enough

Unless uncle Joe is sitting down watching everything you do you and counting every drink you had, you can always get away with saying you have reached your limit. You don’t have to tell your family and friends that your limit is non-alcoholic drinks. That can remain your own little secret, otherwise you might just get someone insisting, “ Ah come on, just one more, it’s New Years.” You can also counteract this remark but saying you have to work the next, you have a big meal to prepare the next, you are driving out of town the next and so on.

You just had a drink

This one again is one you can use without specifying that your drink was a non alcoholic beverage. If your hosts continues to insist you can always say, “maybe later, I don’t want to overdo it and get sick.”

Tell the truth

The hardest one of all is to to simply tell the truth. Many people feel pressured into drinking and do not want people to know that they don’t drink. They want to fit in.

Just say no

You can do it just say no you don’t drink and stick to your guns. You can tell your guests or host that you can have just as much fun for News Years when you are sober.

Excellent job, Happy New Year! Carol!!! xoxoxo

happy new year to you too Diane

Another good article. I was typing one up with excuses that you can use to avoid drinking when your notice came in. It looks like we are on the same wavelength again.

Some U.S. A. states have the ride after a party service and I even know some people who volunteer to drive someone home who has been drinking anytime.Good points made. Thank you!

Roberta that is great to know

they say great minds think alike

great minds think alike Gayle

Happy New Year! We don't drink. We do buy sparkling white grape juice to celebrate.

happy New Year Charlene, I am here bored out of my tree

Both you and Gayle have great minds, great article Carol, Happy happy New Year dear friend.

Well done, Carol. Fortunately I have no reason to say no to drinking on New Years Eve.

thanks Ron and Jerry

Brilliant advice, thanks.

Good job. Happy New Year Carol!

Hi Carol, great article. Although I'am not quite sure why one might need an excuse not to drink--just for the sake of it. unless, of course, one had a genuine reason like a medical condition. Take my advice, you only live once, if you can, have a few drinks and enjoy yourself.

Peter many people choose not to drink and are afraid of others nagging them to drink this is why I wrote this article. Also recovering alcohols and drivers definitely need to stay away from alcohol. Happy Holidays to you and yours

thanks Lorena

Good tips Carol. I drank half a glass of wine last New year but that's it. Those with medical conditions or those who would drive should not definitely drink.

thanks Phoenix I have diabetes and drinking alcohol raises your insulin level.

I don't drink at all either. I've been asked before why I don't drink like something was wrong with me. Not everyone wants to drink. Great article carol.

yes Charlene some people unfortunately are made to feel shamed because they don't drink and that is just not right
